“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” That’s probably the best-known H.L. Mencken quote, but here’s another one you may not have heard before: “For every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.” The state of Oregon is drafting up a rule to make mask-wearing mandates permanent; Mencken would undoubtedly be impressed by his own ability to read the tea leaves of societal regression. Well, I have a Mencken-esque observation of my own: Every time someone leaves the government plugged in and goes away for the weekend, it overheats and burns down the country.
